It could just be some incompatability with my Biostar 8668 motherboard, but this USB board caused havoc. The system with this board installed acted strangely, locking up, re-booting all by itself sometimes, sometimes it would suddenly give me the Blue Screen of Death. I wound up buying new DRAM upgrades and the "slow USB" message I was getting from my ATT U-verse 2-Wire USB wireless adapter went away.

I tried to replace a USB 1 port with this. It wasnt' picked up by XP so I installed the driver sent with it. It just kept locking up my machine so I reinstalled the USB 1 and just live with the speed. A wast of 20 bucks. First product I've gotten through Amazon that was worth less. Still love Amazon.

i used this one for the psp, and it works fine, however, if you don't know about media, you get less storage than it is labeled as, you actually get 227mb of storage instead of 256. anyway, the adapter works fine, and will works with my vaio PC, however, some say the new memory stick pro does not work with the slot on the vaio, just simply download a driver off the sony site to read the MS pro. great product except it is black not white (i think the white is more stylish).

The Lexar Media 256MB Memory Stick Duo Pro MSDP256-331, like most 256MB cards, will store on average 284 pictures when used with a 2 megapixel camera, 213 images when used with a 3 megapixel camera, 128 pictures when used with a 4 megapixel camera, 102 images when used with a 5 megapixel camera, and 80 pictures when used with a 6 megapixel camera. These numbers are based off the assumption that you are going to shoot your images at the highest quality JPEG setting available for the camera and understand that they are estimates and may be off by as much as 10 percent due to numerous factors including the complexity of the scene being shot and the compression algorithm used by your specific camera.

11 seconds for a 64 Megayte file to a 5400 RPM hard drive across USB HighSpeed (2.0). I think things like this are handy if you're the resident computer guy. Carry around updates to various OSes on different JumpDrives like this one. It's come in handy more than once in that capacity. But I'm more likely to take the digital camera with me which, many of them, serves as a flash media drive too. For me having this and a digital camera that can do that would be redundant.

It's quite tough when you handle it properly too. Like, on my keychain it's taken several blows over the last week and it still works. I don't leave mine hooked into the USB ports though because immediately I'd think that would just invite trouble if I happen to hit it (or anything poking out of the USB ports) with something. So, practice common sense. Anything poking out of a port where someone can kick it or heavy items brush up against it will either snap the port off the motherboard or snap the USB plug out of the device. Try to tuck USB ports in hubs and the like towards the middle of the desk or face ports away from foot traffic. True for any port too.

It's a USB flash drive. Most computers these days have USB. What more can I say.

I was a very big fan of this Jumpdrive. It didn't revoluntionize download speed, but it was leaps and bounds better than ZIP, CD or floppy.

My only problem with my drive is it no longer works. Jutting out of my tower, it was destined to be hit, and on first impact the USB port disconnected from the motherboard, and that was the end of it.

Lexar is excellent for marketing, but the reality is less amazing...

The key is nice but the tranfer rate is not the best I have ever seen even on USB 2.0.

Regarding the 'traveler' side, the app is very disappointing: hard to configure and to use!

I do not advise this product.

If you have Sony products, you're stuck with Sony propriatary memory stick formats. Thankfully, you're not stuck with only Sony branded memory.

Lexar makes top of the line memory in reliability and speed. I use Lexar for MS Duo Pro, CF, and SDHC. Never had any problems and the speed of transfer makes my digital cameras recover faster between pictures.

I was initially hesitant because i've never heard of this brand before, but the cheap price and the fairly large memory storage capability drew me in. Besides, if i'm not satisfied I could always return it to Amazon.

I put it to use with my Sony Cybershot as soon as I got it in the mail and I was quite happy. I took about fifty pictures and about 10 minutes of video, and of course, I still had lots of room left. When I uploaded everything into my computer, it only took a few minutes.

With the Lexar, i'll never need to go back to my 128mb sony memory card. I'm so glad I diverged from the brand name route and bought this product, it was worth it.

I upgraded from the standard 16 MB memory stick that came with my Sony camera and I had no problems whatsoever with the memory stick during the time I had my camera. I bought one of these for my new digital camera. 4 days and over 50 MB of photos later, this Memory Stick had a fatal error, taking all of my photos with it. I tried to retrieve the data several ways and all failed. Buy at your own risk. I'd go with a different brand if I were you. I lost photos I'll never get back, and when I returned the stick, the guy at the store told me that this happens more regularly with Lexar than other brands.

I have carried this flash drive on my keychain for over a year and have had no issues with the drive or its clear protective cover. Write speed for a 1GB zip file is around 1.8MB/sec (it takes 10 minutes to write the file to the Firefly). Read speed for the same file is 9.2MB/sec. Overall, I'm quite satisfied with the Firefly 4GB.

I had a the black 2GB FireFly and fell in love with the compact design and overall aesthetics of the product. I'm not sure why most USB flash drives out there are so bloody ugly, but the Lexar is certainly a diamond in the rough. It's so small, I hardly notice that it's in my pocket, and it hardly takes up any space in my briefcase, which is typically overstuffed as it is.

Unfortunately, my 2GB split in half a long the seam, and while it still works, I didn't want to trust my data on it in case the chip became damaged.

Other users have commented that the device is very slow. I agree. I make sure I start copying and backing up files well before it's time to leave work to ensure I don't get stuck waiting. To copy 750 MB of data took 35 minutes--I should have just burned a couple of CDs.

I bought the 4GB because I was generally satisfied with the 2GB. Here's a quick summary of the pros and cons.

- Great design, but not durable. Eventually, my 4GB will split along the seam as my 2GB did.

- Compact. You won't even notice that you're carrying it.

- Very, very slow. Are you sure this isn't a USB 1.0 device?

I really can't begin to describe how slow the transfer rate of the Lexar firefly is. The transfer rate makes it nearly unusable for anything but a few small files. It can take literally HOURS to transfer 500 MB if it is a bunch of small files you are transferring. It is a little bit faster with fewer larger files. However, I recommend looking for something else. I am very disappointed with my purchase.

Actually I just got this card today, so I can't give a long term report but I did check it's speed in my camera. My camera is a Sony A100 SLR, (Alpha). It takes 10 Megapixel pictures. Using this card it took 25 pictures in 10 seconds with no noticeable hesitation. The card I bought with the camera, (PQ1, 1GB Hi-speed 40), is no doubt faster than a standard card, but it only took 20 shots in in 10 secs. I know there are faster cards on the market, but I was happy with the 25 shots in 10 seconds. I hope this will give an indication of what this card will do.

Other reviewers have commented on lack of compatablity with some memory readers. My family has two different Sony digital cammeras and three different (none of them Sony) memory stick readers. I have had no problem with any of the devices I use this memory stick with.

The blinking light is a nice feature for when using the stick readers.

In my experence the Lexar sticks have no functional difference (other than the blinking light) from the Sony sticks. The major difference seems to be the price. Lexar is typically cheaper.

I bought two of the translucent purple sticks. They worked fine in my camera and recorded beautiful images. I travel alot so took the sticks to a photo shop to burn to a CD. The shop was unable to read any of the files. Then when I returned home I tried to transfer the images to my computer. The files were corrupted and I could not open them. Now, I have two sony memory sticks also. I had no problem with either of them. I do not know what the problem with the Lexar media is but it gets worse. Now I can not even view the photo on my camera. I get a message saying "Format Error". The computer and the camera recognize the photo files but are unable to open them. I am heart sick to have lost so many memories. ...

I have a Sony DSC-P71 Cybershot that I use with this memory stick. The memory stick has a LED that light's when it writes. But when it is inside the Cybershot you can't see it. And the Cybershot has it's own LED anyway. So I think this memory stick is wasting batery life.

I purchased the Lexar memory stick for my Sony Vaio PC. I also purchased a Sony PCMCIA Memory Stick Adapter (MSAC-PC2) for my IBM Thinkpad 600E. The adapter worked fine, was recognized instantly by XP, and now I can transfer large amounts of data back and forth among my laptop and my home PC without any problem.

XP recognizes the memory stick about the same as when you insert a CD--it pops up a dialog box asking you what program to use to view the new media.

Althought this compact flash card has a rating of 4x, it seems to work just as good as my 8x card, photographing normal subjects. I have not found a standard rating scale for the speeds between the different brand compact flash cards. I have the "Lexar jump cable" for the Lexar card, it is the actual card (Lexar brand USB enabled)that has the USB information, so other compact cards that are not specified to be USB enabled will not work in the Lexar Jump cable.

Upon reading the last review, I opened the card which seemed too cheap for a HS 2GB card. Slipped it into my Canon PowerShot SD800 IS camera, I took a 3 minute avi movie with the camera which was surprisingly satisfactory. The effect was even better than my previous Kodak v570 camera (which was lost) plus a Kingston (or some other well-known brand) 150x or so card. Good resolution and smooth rendering much like what one would expect from a DVD movie. Three minutes of this avi movie took over 300MD of memory and yet the card was able to handle it. I'm glad having taken the risk of buying this steal at $49.99 CAD at Best Buy. Happy!

I went through two before I gave up, the first one never worked proeprly. It transferred very slowly at first and then not at all. I RMA'd the first one and the one that replaced it worked for two uses before dying. I've since picked up a $8 usb reader that is much slower but much more reliable. I've done lots of video editing with the firewire card so I don't know what kept killing the drives. It'll take some real convincing to get me to buy another lexar product. I hate being negative, but this experience really soured me. It sounds like many have had better success than I, but be ware.

One star. The secured storage function is a liability. When the old laptop died, Windows 7 was due in a matter of weeks and Windows Vista was the mandated OS on all retail laptops. I verified with Lexar support that the secured partition is unavailable in anything beyond XP, there are no drivers, patches or software to remedy that. That incompatibility includes the secured storage not working with Server 2003.

Your only option is to go to another computer still running XP and transfer your data. But that whole process runs counter to the premise of having the data secured in the first place. With any kind of a transfer your data likely becomes vulnerable at some point, especially if one was to attempt that transfer on a work, school or public computer. Until that transfer is an option your highest priority data is just plain gone.

For those who simply want a portable storage device, the physical shape of the device is an obstacle to its use. Its kludgy football shape prevents use of neighboring USB ports. So if you have two USB ports side by side on your system, the Lexar Jumpdrive will take up one port and its width obstructs the other port from being used. Ridiculous, having to unplug the mouse to use this thing!

USB flash drives are a commodity these days, they're given away like candy at trade shows and the like, and certain brick and mortar retailers have 16GB drives for under twenty bucks....and prices are still dropping while storage capacities are increasing. This particular product has no competitive advantage, and the software's incompatibility problems guarantees that future versions can't be trusted either. On the bright side, online support was immediately available and if that support chat window was indeed communicating all the way to southeast Asia, lag time was minimal and responses were friendly, articulate and accurate.

I bought one of these about a year and a half ago and have used it repeatedly without any problems. The cap comes on and off easily (without being prone to come off on its own) and is standing up well to wear and tear. The drive is ergonomically shaped, and has sections on its side that provide friction, making it easy to pull out of USB ports.

There are two things about it, though, which might not make it the drive for you. I've never used the security software; deleting that was the first thing I did with this drive. If the security software gives you trouble, I'd suggest using TrueCrypt. Second, though the drive is shaped in a way that makes it easy to handle, that also makes it very wide, and thick, which can be a real problem if you try to use it on a laptop. It doesn't bother me because I mostly use desktops, but this might be a showstopper for some.

Tired of transferring pictures from your digital camera by digging for a cable? Then this is a must have!

You just pop in a Compact Flash card, and put the card adapter into your PCMCIA slot in your computer. Windows XP automatically recognizes the card as a new "disk drive". You click on the drive just like you would your other hard drives. I have also used this with varying size Compact Flash cards and have not found any that it won't read. Reading of data seems to be very fast, depending only on the Compact Flash card you use. (Some Compact Flash cards are faster than others, but the adapter does not seem to slow down data transfer at all.)

For me, this is much easier than hooking up a cable to transfer pictures. As an accessory that will make your life easier, this is a great deal both in function and cost!

Well, considering I worked in the memory industry for over 7 years I can help clarify this perplexing question and do so unbiased as I have since changed industries.

The Lexar 128MB xD-Picture Card, like most 128MB cards, will store on average 142 pictures when used with a 2 megapixel camera, 106 images when used with a 3 megapixel camera, 64 pictures when used with a 4 megapixel camera, 51 images when used with a 5 megapixel camera, and 40 pictures when used with a 6 megapixel camera. These numbers are based off the assumption that you are going to shoot your images at the highest quality JPEG setting available for the camera and understand that they are estimates and may be off by as much as 10 percent due to numerous factors including the complexity of the scene being shot and the compression algorithm used by your specific camera.

The jump drive worked fine as a weekly backup drive for about a month and then got extemely hot and quit working. I sent it to Lexar and they sent a replacement at no charge. So far, two weeks, the replacement is working fine. Good service from Amazon.com as usual and good replacement service from Lexar. Perhaps I got a lemon, but I did notice on their website that they have had some problems with other models getting hot and going dead.

I had another drive picked out; then I read the good reviews on Amazon about this product. Guess I got a LEMON. About 6 weeks after I received unit, I couldn't access it. I kept getting a message saying disc was not formatted. Did I want to format it? Well, knowing I would lose everything saved on it, I tried a few other things, including their customer service department. Finally, I said "Ok, re-format the darn thing." Got an error message saying it couldn't be re-formatted. I keep trying to get back to customer service at Lexar. No luck yet.

I like this little guy. I removed all the silly software they put on the drive which I thought may mean the storage meter would not work but it does. It suffers from the same problem that most all these flash drives do however in that the structural capability of the USB connector is somewhat deficient and they can get broken if you accidentally kick or hit the body of the drive while it's plugged into a usb port.

Besides that I'm surprised that they don't put these cool little capacity meters on all the jump drives.

I have gone through several flimsy flash drives and am thrilled to have found one that is actually durable. I picked this after reading an article where it survived exposure to heat, impact and water and continued working after. This is the 3rd jump drive I have purchased. Of the three, this seems to have the most durable housing. It also works great on a Mac. It ejects each and every time without any fuss or warnings about damaging the data or the device. So far, so good. I'm very happy and recommending it to colleagues. The only negative is that the external meter (indicates available memory) doesn't seem to work. Not that I really needed it anyway. Good value!

After 1.5 months of moderate use, being carried around in a backpack pocket, the part that sticks in the computer totally broke off today. Unrepairable unless we wanted to get someone to extract the info from the memory stick. That piece had seemed slanted for a few weeks now, and you already had to jiggle it to get it to work.

I've had the 256MB "Sport" Lexar (red, with a black rubber thing around it) for about 2 years now and frequently carry it around on my keys. I'd recommend THAT one (comes in larger sizes now), but not this one. No cap to lose, and hey, it hasn't broken!

Buy another jump drive if you plan to carry it anywhere. NOT this one!

I am giving this unit the lowest possible score for the reasons below. The fact that this is product by Lexar is actually named "Secure" invokes the belief it really is secure. However, I have been discussing this with Lexar for over two weeks now, without resolution.

The problem is that the Encrypted Vault (the reason I purchased the thing) is not available except when signed in as an administrator. Hello??!! Why would Lexar build a unit that is smaller than some earrings my girlfriend wears if they did not expect it to be used as a portable device, meaning it would be used in many different computers? So, if you go to the library, or at work on a network, or at your friend Billy's house, and you are not the administrator, YOU LOSE! The only way around this is to put your most sensitive material right on the public drive, and not use the secure features of the drive. Does that make sense?

I was sent the software version by Lexar with no improvement, and have tried all of their suggestions, and now the unit will display the Microsoft Windows error screen and shut the drive down.

To be fair, if you do not need to access sensitive material on any computer (without admin rights) then this unit could work for you. It works great on my home computer, but I just have to admit that with a PORTABLE device I tend to want to PORT it around and use it on other machines and cannot.

If you need to access your data on many machines, and wish to do so without admin rights, beware! I suggest you look at the Lexar website and contact them to make sure this is possible. I'm still wrestling with them, and am hopeful I can take them to the mat and pin them, and will be able to actually use this storage device as advertised.

"Glitch Using ThumbDrive " 2006-05-30

I've had several Lexar Secure II thumb drives. I purchase them because you can encrypt your data. Not many other thumb drive makers provide encryption software in their thumb drive. All of my Lexar drives worked fine initially, for about a month, then eventually a glitch shows up in all of them. This same glitch occurs when inserting the thumb drive in both my desktop and laptop computers, so I guess that the glitch is probably in the thumb drive, not the computers.

The glitch is that I am unable to "Safely Remove the Hardware" when I click on the drive removal icon at the lower right hand corner of the screen. I am force to do an "unsafe" removal by simply pulling the thumb drive out. I believe that this technique may be corrupting some files in my computer to the point that often I get the "blue screen of death" when I shut down. This "blue screen of death" probably occurs because the computer is unable to remove the thumb drive when it is trying to shut down.

I do not have removal problems with thumb drives made by other companies, that does not have the encryption software. My guess is that the glitch in within Lexar's encryption software.

It is obviously difficult to provide trouble free encryption software in thumb drives. If it was simple, then more thumb drive companies would do so.

This glitchs makes the thumb drive not very usable because each time you do an unsafe removal, you run the risk of corrupting more files in your computer and possibly ruining it. Overall, I've wasted my money on these drives and will never buy another Lexar drive again.

In fact this memory is a 2 x 128MB, meaning you have to switch from "A" to "B" when you get 128MB of photos/video. I bought these to take some underwater photos, so how am I suppose to take this memory stick out of my camera, switch to the other free 128MB and place it back on, all these underwater?!

I think LEXAR should advertise that this product is a 2x128MB and not 256MB as they did.

I just bought another one because the last one gave me the "format error" mentioned by other reviewers. Otherwise, for the cost and the capacity, I am willing to give it another try. It did cause problems for me in my profession, but my clients allowed me to reshoot, and I need the extra space. There are not many choices of memory for those of us not willing to give up our old Sony DSC S85 cameras. These are no longer being manufactured so I guess Lexar became aware of the problems. Certainly you would want 1mb+ of memory if you were on a long trip, or needed to make the equivelent of more than 50 pictures at 5mb (reasonably high resolution - good for up to 10x8 photos). Otherwise this is sufficient memory for most.

I have had NO problems with this Lexar Media Card at all. Does the job - reasonable price.

I bought this card for my Kodak Easy Share 3.1 mp camera. Before I ordered it I was a little worried that it might not work, but I was very happy that when I received it, it worked right off without having to format it or anything. I bought it specifically for a Duran Duran concert on July 18th in Orlando; I took 80+ pictures and did not have to wait long after each picture to take another one. I then took the card to Walmart to have the pictures printed, and it worked fine there as well. If you are looking for a reliable memory card to hold a lot of pictures, try this one!

Got a 128 mb card for my digital camera then a few days ago dropped my camera from 5 feet or more on hard concrete floor with the card in it.

Lexar does make quality products and mine was made in taiwan.

While 133x is ok, go for the 300 if you're shooting sports or are in need of serious fps for whatever reason. For "prosumer" bodies (Nikon D300, Canon 30/40/50D, etc), this should be ok.

I just picked up some 8GB 300's for less than $100 each. The 133 is going for about $58. It's just a matter of cost and what you really need, as opposed to what you think you want. I do need to have the faster speed shooting 10fps, but on my other bodies the 133's I have work great.

What can I say about this? It's a fast CF card and it's great to have 8G of room to shoot on my Nikon D200. I have several other Lexar cards (and a 4G card of the same model) and they all perform flawlessly just like my Sandisk Extreme III cards. Transfer rates to the PC are much faster with these Lexar 133x cards, though.

I've been using one of these for three years, and it works very well. Cards insert cleanly, fit snugly, and the data moves quickly. No drivers are needed in Mac OSX. There is no cable integrated into the unit, which is convenient for me, as I have a 'utility' firewire cable that I use for devices like this that need to be plugged in only occasionally.

What's not to like?

1. the hinged door pops off much too easily, exposing the innards to dust. I have to reattach the door half the time I use the reader.

2. it generates heat when plugged in, even when not in use, enough heat that I fear for the longevity of the device. I therefore unplug it whenever I'm not using it.

3. Firewire 400 only, which makes this a trailing-edge device today. I am considering replacing mine with a similar Firewire 800 CF reader.

It is a memory stick, there is not much to say about it. It did not fail or destroy any of my data, which is about all you can say about such products. I'm still a little hesitant about this price point for the product, in comparison to other formats 128 MB is starting to become a very small amount. One note: it is not translucent purple as it appears in the image, it is the dull purple-blue of all of the other Sony memory sticks.

How many pictures will it store? It is the most commonly asked question from digital camera enthusiast but usually the question that is the most difficult to get a straight answer about. Well, considering I worked in the memory industry for over 7 years I can help clarify this perplexing question and do so unbiased as I have since changed industries.

The Lexar Media 128MB Memory Stick, like most 128MB cards, will store on average 142 pictures when used with a 2 megapixel camera, 106 images when used with a 3 megapixel camera, 64 pictures when used with a 4 megapixel camera, 51 images when used with a 5 megapixel camera, and 40 pictures when used with a 6 megapixel camera. These numbers are based off the assumption that you are going to shoot your images at the highest quality JPEG setting available for the camera and understand that they are estimates and may be off by as much as 10 percent due to numerous factors including the complexity of the scene being shot and the compression algorithm used by your specific camera.

I truly hope this review was helpful to you in determining whether this card is the right capacity for your specific needs.

The Stick that came with my Sony HandyCam (8MB) was not sufficient and wanted to get a bigger one - I read good reviews about this in Amazon, elsewhere and from friends - though one review said there could be compatibility issues with Sony, I did not fine any - works like a charm.

I give 4 stars because of the performance issue mentioned by other reviewers is true. I never tried 128Mb Sony brands but if Sony got the same problem I give it 5 stars due to the price different.

I'm using Sony 8, 32 & 64Mb memory stick & all give me instant access (I really not feel any delay even in 64Mb, but I pretty sure there is if measure by instrument)

The main concern of any memory cards is reliability - this one didn't need any reformat after 4 months use. Some of my Sony brand memory sticks did give me "device not read" error & need to reformat before I can use it.

Price is good coz I got it for 32+. Also, 256Mb is still too expensive to have one now compare with other memory formats.

Lexar USB2.0 reader went from erratic to consistently dead. Playing with the software was annoying, it seems to crash Windows Explorer or Computer management very easily. Open the case (remove screw under label, pry open plastic), press on some parts, worked. Suspect L1 very near the USB connector. Anyway it seems to work pretty well without the case.

"Don't buy any that's not Sony" 2006-09-03

When I purchased my Sony Cybershot camera I researched which storage device to buy for a while. I saw a lot of bad comments for the Scan Disk drive because Sony cameras would sometimes not recognize it and then the purchase it's lost. I decided to get this one because I hadn't heard of anyone having this problem with the Lexar. Well there's a first time for everything. My lexar memory stick worked fine for a few months (the only reason why I am rating it as a 2 and not a 1) but now the camera won't recognize it and I have to get a new one. I have friends who are techies and most of them have adviced me that for Sony cameras, you should really get a Sony memory stick.

This LEXAR brand has had issues with it's Memory Cards. I lost lots of pictures from a vacation to Disney World and a Convention. Their site had SOFTWARE that was to help recover some of those lost images!! I have never had Flash memory trouble until LEXAR! I now only buy SCANDISK items. Samsung invented this tecnology and SD is their product. The Store I bought the LEXAR chip was in a hurry to give me another chip I could trust. He gave me the higher costing SD chip. I wasn't the first to have issues from buying it in his store. He took a $50.00 loss to make me happy. People take lots of photos now that we went Digital. Imagine looking for some pictures you know you took and they are not there! Most think they messed up. WIth this chip you will have that happen so pay very close attention. Most of what is lost can not be recovered. Pay the extra money for SCANDISK.

For a long time, MultiMediaCards (MMCs) were a tough sell against other formats such as CompactFlash & SmartMedia (and lately vs Sony Memory Sticks too), largely because they were offered in smaller memory capacities and always had a higher cost-per-meg than those formats. The SD card (interchangeable with MMC cards) is a format which has some distinct advantages over the other formats in terms of physical size and memory protection. However, when compared to other SD cards of smaller sizes (eg. the several 256MBs available), there is a considerable premium here on a dollar-per-meg basis (all of those are well under 50 cents per meg). I think for most folks it makes more sense to buy two 256 MBs than to put all one's eggs (and files) in one costlier basket. When the new 1 Gig cards come out, the price on the 512s will drop.

Yeah, I have all the latest service packs for XP and Vista and those MicroSD HC cards read fine in every other USB reader except this one.

Lexar tech support is a cluster of morons, you'd have better luck getting answers from a housecat on a dairy farm. They'll dismiss tech support inquiries with statements such as

"we only guarantee compatibility with Lexar memory devices..."

THEN THEY SHOULD SAY SO ON THE PACKAGE !!!

Don't plan on RELIABLY using most cards larger than 2GB in this p.o.s

This device feels like a plastic toy, but it works very well with my XD-Picture cards, which most multi-card readers can't handle. A three foot usb cable is included. Getting the card in and out of the slot wasn't difficult after the first few times. The potentially loose cover isn't an issue with me because I leave the reader plugged into my desktop computer with the usb cable.

"Don't bother with this outdated product" 2008-11-04

I purchased the Lexar Media MULTI CARD READER (RW022-001) about four years ago. In the past years, it has worked reasonably well. But with the advent of high capacity SD cards (2GB and over), this card reader is now obsolete. Worse yet, I learned the hard way that it may even corrupt newer SD cards.

I benchmarked a Kingston 2GB Elite Pro SD Card using this card reader. After returning the card to my Canon S5, the camera displayed "Memory card error". It turns out the Lexar Media multi-card reader is only compatible with SD 1.0 specification, which is for capacity up to 1GB. But to read/write a 2GB SD, it has to be SD 1.1 compatible. When I put in a 2GB SD into a SD 1.0 card reader and performed a read/write benchmark, it corrupted the directory structure of the SD card. Therefore my camera can no longer recognize the card.

Fortunately, I was able to use 'Photo Rec' (a free open-source file recovery program) to recover most of my image files from this 2GB SD card. I then have to reformat the card from my computer in order to use it again.

When I insert a SDHC card (with capacity 4GB or over) into this card reader, it cannot even see the SDHC card. But at least in this case it will not corrupt the card.

I have since purchased the Transcend M5 Multi Card Reader. Not only is the Transcend M5 compatible with all SD/SDHC cards, it even makes all my CF and SD cards perform about 50% faster! For example: when I benchmarked the SanDisk 2GB Ultra II CF Card in my old Lexar reader, I received a rather disappointing write speed of 4.1MB/S (equivalent to '27x'). The same card in the new Transcend M5 gave me a write speed of 5.9MB/S, or 40x.

(Note that Sandisk claims the Ultra II CF is capable of 15MB/S, but that's the maximum speed under optimal test condition)

In summary, this Lexar card reader is incompatible with SD cards larger than 1GB, is a lot slower than the Transcend M5, but costs more. So I see no reasons in getting this outdated product now.

Using Windows XP Pro. Worked fine for about a year. Then it started to only transfer data at super super slow speeds. I've tried it on 4 computers that all work fine with other USB devices and card readers, but it does the same thing, complains it was plugged into a USB 1.1 port. I haven't had a computer with USB 1.1 ports for 5 years.

The front panel that swings down and becomes the support is poorly designed and can't even support the weight of the reader empty. It will push shut and hit your cards. Buy another model or brand because this one is a lemon.

I bought this card to use in the Boss Micro BR guitar recorder as it was one of the cards recommended by Boss. The machine recognized it immediately, the performance is on par with the card Boss supplied with the Micro BR. So no complaints for the purpose I bought it for. And the price is excellent, so I may get a couple more.

I specifically ordered the Lexar 1GB SD1GB-231 because it was certified to work with a piece of equipment I own. I am sad to say that the card I received was a Sandisk SD card. My review is therefor for the company that shipped the card to me. How would you feel if you didn't get the exact item you purchased? They could have contacted me to tell me they didn't have the Lexar card. Upset customer.
